Dr. Samuel Friedel

Ophthalmology

Dr. Friedel graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1977, and then completed his internship and Ophthalmology residency  training at Maryland General Hospital, now called  University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (UMMC Midtown).  Upon completing his Ophthalmology residency in 1981 Dr. Friedel began his clinical practice in medical and surgical eye care and was also appointed the Ophthalmology Residency Program Director in which role he has trained over 100 ophthalmologist. 

In 1988 he was appointed  the Chief of Ophthalmology at UMMC Midtown.  In 2008 the UMMC Midtown ophthalmology training program merged with the training program at the University of Maryland and shortly thereafter Dr. Friedel was appointed the Program Director for that larger, combined program.  Dr. Friedel also joined the faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine as a Clinical Associate Professor.  

 

In June 2020, after almost 40 years in the role, Dr. Friedel retired from being Program Director.  He continues on the School of Medicine faculty, teaching young ophthalmologists, retains his leadership roles at UMMC Midtown as Chief of Ophthalmology and remains a fully active physician and surgeon providing medical and surgical eye care to his patients.
